In college I built my own computer. It was a great experience, and I still use that computer 7 years later when writing this. Saying you built your own computer tends to earn a lot of tech savvy points with the average person, but it's really not that hard. A lot's changed since the days of Wozniak's home brew club & the Altair, and these days you can by the parts and put them together without much more difficulty than assembling a piece of Ikea furniture. If you need an upgrade later, you can open your case up & snap a piece in.
This ease is based in no small part on the standardization of the ATX & PCI standards, a set of guidelines for how hardware should be made in such a way as to be compatible with other devices. One thing that's impressed and worried me lately is the dearth of such a standard for cell phones, and the perhaps anemic attempts to create one. It's an unfortunate marker of the way technology has gone from a scientific industry with the goal of empowering individuals and humankind to a consumer industry chasing fashion and trendiness, but I'm getting ahead of myself.
People are talking a lot these days about a little thing a little, 3.5 millimeter thing. Apple decided not to include a headphone jack on their phones, Google is following suit with their latest Pixel, and the creator of the android OS also axed the jack with the Essential Phone. The last one really bugs me, because empowering the tech consumer with more choices is one of the reasons why essential was founded, and yet the most ubiquitous, easy to use, and powerful interface options was deemed unnecessary.
OK, when I started this blog I wanted to stick to bigger issues, things that effect society or even humanity. Why am I letting myself get distracted by the minutia of what's popular in cell phones these days? Well, it's because this is a symptom of a larger, much more insidious cultural disease. Wow, OK that could be overselling it, but as I've mentioned before the choice to go with something stylish or convenient instead of something which creates an empowering infrastructure is perilous.
The Essential phone has some special connectors for accessories. Motorola is making phones with attachable accessories as well, but they go the extra mile of providing a developer kit for independent companies that want to produce these. The highest level of this was the now tragically defunct Project Ara which planned to produce an entirely modular smartphone. It also had the distinction of being the only project I know of that would have released a standard that could be used by any company to produce appropriate components. If the essential accessories or moto mods take off, any other manufacturer that wants to let customers use these will have to license the specifications from essential or Motorola, and that means they probably won't proliferate anytime soon.
And thus we, the consumer, have to be content taking whatever the phone companies decide to give us. Oh, we can shop around a little for more memory here or a better camera there, but the reality is we can't really choose what we want in our phones, or how they work. A handful of tech giants makes those decisions for us. And that's not only true for phones. that's true for social networks, gaming platforms, and more. What's the more? Well, perhaps news organizations, political parties, and advertisements. This is where the insidious cultural disease part comes up. Most people have their phone on them for most of the day in 2017. We can't act like decisions about how that works being made by some team of marketers and engineers rather than individuals is OK and won't siphon away independence and freedom from the individual.

Pluto Should Never Have Been a Planet
I just finished reading Mike Brown's How I Killed Pluto and Why it had it Coming, and it was a fantastic read. It got me thinking of so many things; scientific progress and history, how the public perceives scientific ideas, becoming entrenched in a way of thinking, distress over change, and how so much of education seems to be storing data in memory rather than learning algorithms (and man for some reason I've really been connecting with my inner computer scientist lately) are just some of the highlights. It's amazing how much depth there is to the trivial or technical classification details of a rock out there past Neptune. There's one more aspect of the book that I loved, Mike Brown's humanity in his love for his wife, his daughter, and the sky, but I think I'll write about that in detail later.
I remember when Pluto was reclassified. Many jokingly consoled forlorn Pluto, kicked out of the planet club by the big boys. After reading the book I find it odd, why did no one talk about Eris (the Kuiper belt object actually larger than Pluto which theoretically could have been the tenth planet)? Why did no one bring up Charon, Pluto's moon which is almost as large as Pluto? Why did no one discuss what exactly it meant to be a planet, and how exciting it was that we were learning more about our solar system in finding so much out there in a whole new asteroid belt out beyond the gas giants, the aforementioned Kuiper belt?
I've groused before on this blog about the dreadful way mathematics is taught, perhaps it's time to get some of that ire up for science as well. One thing the book made clear is that we all learned that the planets are Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune, and (as we learned at least) Pluto. Did any of us ever learn what a planet is? I think the 'Pluto controversy' pretty clearly indicates no, we didn't. If we had we would have always found Pluto's planethood a little odd.
Pluto's moon doesn't orbit around it, they orbit around each other. Pluto's orbit is eccentric from the other planets. Pluto is smaller than many planet's moons, including Earth's. To kids and creatives that might make Pluto mysterious and fascinating (it did to Mike Brown as a child), but to scientists and logical thinkers it seems misplaced in the solar system. And indeed it was.
But no one really seemed to feel that way. We all sort of felt bad for Pluto, and some people might have even been upset. I think there's two major components why. The first is, as I alluded to, the way we learn science. The next is our unwillingness to accept change.
Thinking about the Pluto controversy I am brought to worry that we are often taught 'the way things are'. Mike Brown talks about trying to get students out of the mindset of, "Give me the answers I need to know for the test". The unfortunate implication is that something gets them into this mindset in the first place. Standardized testing is a convenient and popular target for modern problems in education, but I'd feel remiss if I didn't mention that of necessity it requires students to memorize and later regurgitate facts, and testing any deeper thought processes is at the very least much more difficult.
I read a NYT article that talked about why teaching the difference between fact and opinion like we currently do in schools is morally perilous, as well as simply fundamentally misguided. It points out interesting ideas, like how teaching children that facts are provable and true causes them to equate truth with provability, even though they're very different things. I think a focus on 'facts' in science class also carries a dogmatic implication for young students. Science is always true because we collected evidence for our ideas. Here's where the distress comes up; Pluto no longer being a planet means facts can change as our understanding does.
And that opens up a whole new can of worms in our minds. It forces introspection and meta-cognition, in which sadly most of us are loath to participate. It creates a crisis of certainty, because after all if Pluto being a planet isn't true what other tidbits we learned might not be true? Doubt is, unfortunately, scary to many. We're unwilling to change our thinking, to update our knowledge, to print retractions or errata for our memories. This is why teachings of humility are so important. They allow us to maintain our sense of self and identity even when we're forced to change our thinking, context, or experience.
A great idea that came together for me when I read The Island of Knowledge is that science must necessarily be the least sure of itself of all human endeavors or reservoirs of understanding. It must be forever willing to except new evidence or observation which proves previous ideas wrong, and moreover perhaps must forever be seeking these out. No less than the well known and liked Neil DeGrasse Tyson recently said in a podcast I listened to that the greatest problem is always dogmatism, because it ends a conversation and makes learning from others difficult or impossible. Let's take this to heart, accept that Pluto should never have been a planet, and rejoice in the fascinating newly unfolding mysteries of that Kuiper belt.

Trick or Treating: The Last Bastion of Neighborhood Community?
People don't know their neighbors any more. Our interactions are more and more impersonal, mediated by computers. We have fewer and fewer real communities to engage in. They're being replaced by forums and social networking groups. These things aren't as bad as people often make them out to be, but they do present problems. We're cut off from genuine interaction. It's being replaced with a type of self promotion, making it harder and harder to 'be ourselves' and be accepted for who we are. We're exposed to less diversity because we don't spend time with those whose ideas and opinions differ from us. Churches, neighborhood barbecues, and kids playing in the street used to serve these purposes. Most people don't go to church these days, I can't remember the last time I heard about a neighborhood barbecue, and we setup play dates for the kids nowadays. There's one area that still hearkens back to the days of the local community, though.
Trick or treating is a wonderful Halloween tradition that builds a neighborhood. Once a year parents and kids walk around, say hi to their neighbors, show off costumes, and share sweets. What a classic community building activity that is! Families can talk afterward about how cute the kid down the street looked dressed up like a princess, or which families in town gave out the best candy. Finally, a time when a family can discuss their neighbors and how much they enjoyed spending some time with them!
This is an important lesson for our children, too. 364 days a year we tell our kids about 'stranger danger,' but on Halloween they're finally encouraged to meet new people. They're rewarded with candy, given to them in return for wearing an amusing costume and displaying it for thirty seconds at the neighbor's door. This activity will teach them that they don't have to be suspicious and scared of every person they share the world with. They might even learn that many people are kind human beings.
Even this noble tradition is dying out, though. We're learning how to make imitation trick or treating that, like imitation food, is a pale shadow of the real thing that carries little of the original value. Church groups do 'trunk or treats' to make sure families can collect candy with kids while remaining insulated from their neighbors and any community they don't approve of. Trick or treating routes are less and less up and down the street you live on and instead are becoming visits to homes of family friends. Some people in a sickening twisting of the tradition in pursuit of efficiency and increasing returns worthy of a heartless corporation go up into the wealthy areas of town, spurning their own neighbors, because 'they give better candy.'
Let's not become that people. Let's continue to love our neighbors and even learn to enjoy their company. Let's teach our kids to build a community and meet those they share the world with. Let's go trick or treating around our neighborhood this Halloween.

Crying About Mathematics
I recently saw this image posted on Facebook and then looked at the last 3 posts from Grammarly, the original poster. We have a think piece on whether universities should require writing proficiency for graduation, a joke about precision and exactitude in grammar standards leading to vandalism (with indications that that's at least understandable) and a prettied up quote from John Dewey that, "Education is not the preparation for life; it is life itself." That last one is particularly interesting in contrast with this image and it leads to the obvious implication that what they really mean is, "Education (in the arts, humanities, and soft sciences) is deeply fulfilling and enriches life to the point of making it worth living, but of course we know technical sciences and mathematics are just painful things to be suffered through."
This is probably a good example of why US culture is so innumerate (the numerical equivalent to illiterate, a term coined by John Allen Paulos) and inept at scientific thought. This is where we get the reflex of credibility toward the phrases "experts say" or "studies show" or the news stories that butcher or manipulate statistics to serve whatever purpose hits the emotional agenda of the story. I'll be the first to admit (and then probably go on a tirade about the problem for however long you listen plus ten minutes) that our mathematics education is just heinous and obsolete to a point that would be absurd if it weren't so damaging and dangerous. With that said the solution is certainly not to perpetuate the idea that these things are hard, stressful, and just generally unpleasant.
I've written here before about the nobility and importance of mathematics, and this one won't be the last time I do, so perhaps I'm just belaboring an idea, but I'm going to list out some of mathematics' virtues anyway.

Like I said we teach math horribly (in the US at least), especially at the elementary level which means that when children are forming their emotional understandings they learn early that math is something hard and to be feared. It doesn't help that so many who shape the culture are also the worst at mathematics and mathematical thinking. Still, none of these jabs at "that painful and useless old field, math" seem to present solutions or even raise awareness about the problems of media misrepresentation or the need for educational STEM reform.
I've been told that it's about thinking differently, that the jokes are just trying to say, "Oh man, my brain sure doesn't work that way," but mathematicians and scientists aren't sharing Facebook memes about how useless writing and art are. The most I've seen are more along the lines of, "Boy it's really frustrating how misrepresented we are and how poorly understood and distorted our work is when presented for public consumption." Also, I don't really buy that our thinking is all that different. When I tutored mathematics the problem really seemed to be more about attitude. People didn't put effort into learning or doing mathematics because they thought it was hard, boring, or just not important to them. With effort they picked up the concepts just fine, but the attitudes that surround math made them reticent in putting forth that effort.
Math students have often been taught in what one teacher of mine referred to as the GMTED or the "Give Me The Equation, D***it!" mindset. Try to discuss the concepts behind the figures, the real meaning of the numbers and symbols and they shut down and demand you give them a simple formula so they can mechanically plug numbers in. Math education is too often a "human programming" job, using drills, memorization, and routines to create humans that will carry out operations to compute a value. This must change, but can't if people believe that actually thinking about math is something they're incapable of because, "their brain just doesn't work that way."
So I beg of you, respect mathematics. Let's leave behind the antiquated views of math as prima facie unappealing as we leave behind the systems that have made thousands fail to understand the beauty and wisdom it contains. Let's elevate our understanding of ourselves by doing meditative mathematics. Let's elevate our understanding of the universe by understanding the language in which God wrote it. Let's create a society that values this great field of human thought and endeavor that's gifted us the computer, engineering, and so much more. Let's create an intellectualism that, to paraphrase the apocryphal inscription above Plato's Academy, lets none but mathematicians enter; not out of elitism or to exclude readers, writers, artists, and other so-called non-math people but in recognition that a complete philosopher will be mathematician in addition to artist, reader, theologian, writer, and more as he or she embraces all the many worthy areas of endeavor in the vast yet limited expanse of human knowledge.

- Math is Mind Expanding: Mathematics deals with concepts that can go beyond normal human experience. How often do you work with the infinite? Did you know there were several different sizes of infinity, and that some infinities are larger than others? I had a very serious discussion with some family and friends recently about dimensional figures and the nature of God. I wear a metal Möbius band (a strip that has only one side, yes really) on a necklace that was given to me by my wife.
- Math is Humbling: The humanities are important largely because they teach us to think emotionally, form opinions, and understand the human experience. Math, and the sciences (though perhaps to a lesser degree), teach us to think rationally, examine our ideas, and understand the world around us and, yes, the human experience as well. In mathematics one thing must strictly follow from the last and we must learn to abide by the rules of the operations we're performing. We can form and idea or an opinion just as easily as we can in any humanities class, but then we're told to really look at that, to see if it makes sense in context, and it can become starkly clear when it's not. Humanities often remind us that how we perceive and judge the world around us matters. Mathematics, and the sciences, remind us that the laws of systems (like the universe) don't just bend to our will because we think we have a better idea of how things should be.
- Math Teaches Self Awareness: Like my last point, the requirements within mathematics that we "stay within the lines" as we progress form one thought to the next in our process of proving, computing, or deriving new information means we need to learn to watch our thoughts, and see where they fail to stay consistent with our principles. Learning how we think, how one thought in the mind springs from the last and whether that process is working properly or in need of reform is pretty clearly an invaluable skill that will better society if widespread.

Fix it Mommy!
Over this last weekend I had the opportunity to see a number of my cousins, many of which have young children. One moment in particular stuck out for me. One of the mothers asked for some sort of cream or lotion to give her child. The child specifically wanted what I believe was an anti-histamine cream to relieve some itching, but the mother knew that anything with roughly the same physical properties would fill the child's real need; to have their problem attended to and be given a simple solution.
Children are obligated to go to their parents to fix the majority of their problems. In infancy they have only the one signaling mechanism to do this, crying, and deploy it whenever they experience discomfort or want so they can obtain the attention of parents that will then fix the problem. As children get older parents teach them more sophisticated signaling mechanisms (such as 'using their words'), but the drive is the same, get the attention of mom or dad so that they'll put in the effort to fix my problem.
I also witnessed the impotent rage and anguish children experience when this process fails, or even more horribly when mom or dad suddenly turn and become the cause of vexation (like being told to leave the swimming pool). The wise parents I was with simply weathered the tantrums and softly prompted their kids to learn to manage their emotional responses with greater aplomb. The lesson will hopefully be learned by these children, though it will probably take a few more years of experience and cerebral development.
What struck me was the inborn drive represented by this, and the realization of how often this thinking expresses itself throughout society. We are constantly turning to figures of authority and power hoping that with their attention and efforts focused on us our problems will get fixed. We get angry when those we think are supposed to fix our problems do things that stifle our enjoyment and comfort. At another point I also discussed with my father, a professional psychological counselor, how so many want a pill to fix their problems and prefer that solution despite numerous benefits therapy has over drugs.
We can be active and fight to better our lives when possible, and feel the disappointments of unfortunate but unyielding circumstances without letting that sadness or anger hijack our mind. I'm taking a class in pharmacology over the summer and the lesson that comes up over and over is that all drugs have side effects, and therapy is always just a matter of handling one thing with a cost that's deemed acceptable. As Thomas Sowell put it, "All that goes with the territory, that is with a universe we did not make having constraints we cannot escape, and offering only trade offs however much the intelligencia and the politicians proclaim solutions."
The realization that there are no easy solutions for the biggest problems in our lives and that we're doomed to an eternal existence of managing (as opposed to fixing) the obstacles in our personal lives and our community is sobering, indeed. The realization that there are no easy solutions for the biggest problems in our lives and that we're doomed to an eternal existence of managing (as opposed to fixing) the obstacles in our personal lives and our community is sobering, indeed. It is also what we must accept if we want to truly gain maturity beyond the child yelling, "Fix it, mommy!"

Are We Ready for Post Scarcity? Part 3
So technology has brought us a new world. The new technologies developed in the 20th and 21st centuries have created a world with changes as drastic as the invention of agriculture over 10 millenia ago. This new world is awe inspiring in its productive capabilities. Like the soviets upon seeing American grocery stores or backyard pools, those of us from the old worlds look in disbelief on the abundance the highly automated modern world offers. Will that disbelief be an awestruck hopeful wonderment, or a horrified cringing at the dystopian nightmare on display?
What becomes of the human being, the individual in the post-scarcity world? While objectively unanswerable, for now, science fiction and current trends can give us an idea. Star Trek provides the most hopeful vision, a humanity that devotes itself to self improvement and growth, bravely venturing out to explore the universe or just starting a small restaurant to share the joy of old family recipes (like Joseph Sisko from DS9). People engage in their passions and become the greatest captains, scientists, or chefs that they can thanks to the freedom from desire and from the struggle for the basic necessities of life. While this optimism is one of the reasons we love Star Trek it doesn't strike us as realistic.
On the other side of the spectrum we see the 'dystopian,' or broken utopia, genre of fiction. The lack of scarcity in information and communication enabled by the internet has made government surveillance and monitoring so easy that the protections for citizens seem to come only from law these days. And that can easily fail, as the victory of the ACLU against ongoing programs of the NSA showed. The NSA's activities have many shouting that, "1984 was not an instruction manual." A conversation from the video game Deus Ex indicates another interesting, and all to realistic, future:
These uncomfortable futures are just fiction, for now, but sadly they seem to strike us as truer to reality. One of the consequences of post-scarcity living is that power can evaporate. It can also become much more concentrated. Abuses by law enforcement that were once prevented by their sheer infeasibility now need laws in place to protect citizens (the supreme court decision on GPS tracking is a good example of this to add to the NSA's recent abuses of power). However when laws are needed the question inevitably arises of who will write them.
The genius of American government is the idea of the powerful individual, that every citizen has strength enough to make their voice resonate in the halls of power. The idea has caught on so strongly that it's easy to forgot how revolutionary and unthinkable this idea would be only 500 or so years ago when monarchs were the norm, and for basically all of human history before that when the strong took what they wanted without regard for whether or not the man they were taking it from cared to give it up.
The same power of technology that can eliminate scarcity could also conceivably eliminate freedom. Corporate influence over lawmakers could barely be necessary if companies like John Deere, Apple, and Comcast continue along their trajectories. Imagine the power the tractor company would hold if they were able to dictate whether or not their machinery were allowed to be repaired or you would just have to buy a new one to continue sowing grain. Consider the power of a company with similar power over electronics and personal computers. All the innovation and creativity in the world doesn't mean a thing if a company controlling the means of distribution for new products and stories can decide to refuse their service.
How can we dilute these powers, without only strengthening centralized government power, and while still providing opportunity and daily bread for the individual? I don't know. I have some ideas, but truly I can't say what I'd really do if I were ruler of the world, or even just the US. What I can say is that no one else really can either. There's a dearth of ideas and solutions floating around out there because we're not addressing the issue.

Talking about robotics and computing replacing human beings as the driving force in the economy sounds like science fiction, despite the fact that we continually experience it as reality. The whole issue is so massive and so out there that it's not addressed seriously in politics, and rarely in thoughtful conversation. If this continues we'll find ourselves in a world clinging to obsolete social mores and struggling to make them fit in the modern world. We can't let that happen, so let's think about getting ready for post-scarcity.

Are We Ready for Post Scarcity? Part 2
It's easy to romanticize scarcity when looking to address the problems that arise as it fades from the eyes of humankind. Recent bouts in popular culture of "paleo-nostalgia" show us just how absurd our longing for "the good old days" can get. But the good old days were never as good as we pretend they were. The fifties had Jim Crow laws. Pre-industrial society was awash in the filth of both the horses that pulled carriages and the humans that rode in them. Why I should have to point out the scourges of humanity in medieval, bronze age, or stone age days is beyond me, but I'll mention crusades and inquisitions, the slavery that built the pyramids, and war among rival tribes of cave men just to be safe.
I bring this up because it's important to note that I'm not advocating we avoid creating a post scarcity world. Precisely the opposite, I want to acknowledge that we're in the middle of doing so, and embrace the change. To do that though, we need to be wary and accepting of the consequences. Some of those may be unimaginable and have to be addressed as they come. Others are more predictable, especially when we consider history.
I mentioned the abundance of food in part one. Now consider farming, the production of that food. Farming is remarkably different in the modern world, and it's so efficient that we can produce so much food that our primary concerns don't regard abundance. We take abundance of food for granted, instead seeking better quality and solutions for what to do with the excess. This has come at a price, though.
The great depression featured, "Farming communities and rural areas suffer[ing] as crop prices fell by approximately 60%." (wikipedia, citing three other sources) The abundance and efficiency of farming is so staggering that only through heavy subsidies is agriculture profitable today. These subsidies are so severe that Lawrence Lessig in his book Republic, Lost titles his chapter on government farming subsidies, "Why don't we have free markets?" We recoil at the realization that government is deciding what food gets grown, and yet this might be important and beneficial to society, since we all like to eat. Surely subsidizing agriculture is better than milk being spilled into gutters while thousands only a few hundred miles away starved, a characteristic image of the depression?
Food is one thing, it's physical and tangible. We're all familiar with it and easily understand what it means. Information is quite another, yet it's the next thing whose scarcity is being obliterated. Personal computing and the internet have done a pretty good job already, once again changing the problems from availability to find-ability of information of high enough quality and relevance.
What have humans done with this? We haven't become a society of well read polyglots that understand the conflicts between relativity and quantum mechanics as we might hope. We're very well entertained, though. Entertainment is just a form of information, after all. A textbook has roughly the same form as a storybook. With Netflix, Hulu, & Youtube, for videos alone we can spend our entire day being entertained for probably not quite $100 a month.
This doesn't (necessarily) mean we're stupid or shallow, though. Many of the most popular shows are sharply written character and political dramas like House of Cards, Mad Men, Breaking Bad, and Game of Thrones. The recent revival of Carl Sagan's Cosmos series did well. It could be argued more people are writing than ever before thanks to blogging sites like what you're reading now and maybe even social media.
OK, I'll admit I might not be buying the idea that the lack of scarcity in entertainment is improving us as a people either, but on the other hand I'm not going to dismiss it outright. A stronger example might be video games. The juggernaut game Minecraft is almost exclusively a creative tool rather than a traditional game. Gaming has a strong community of "modding," or learning some basic (or in some cases extremely complex) programming tools used in a game to create a variant of that game. These variants span anything between the original game with a failure message changed from, "You died." to "Thanks, Obama!" to entirely new games built on the same graphics and gameplay engine.
In both food and entertainment we do see demand for quality now that availability is so high. People grow from just being happy to have something to eat to wanting something that is organic, gluten-free, or maybe even something actually important. People start paying attention to what their food is over whether or not it's there. Likewise in entertainment we are demanding quality more and more. We are seeking entertainment that we can, as Kevin Spacey says, "engage with...with a passion and an intimacy that a blockbuster movie could only dream of."
Bertrand Russell writes in his essay In Praise of Idleness about the odd disconnect that exists between our valuation of production and consumption. While we admire productivity we don't highly value consumption. Those who earn money have prestige, but not those eager to spend it. He points out the oddity of this, particularly when we only earn money is by others' spending of it. "We think too much of production, and too little of consumption. One result is that we attach too little importance to enjoyment and simple happiness, and that we do not judge production by the pleasure that it gives to the consumer."
Russell also alludes to the caste and class scaffolds that these attitudes seem to stem from. He even goes so far to argue that the traditional work ethic arose largely as a tool of slave-owners and autocrats to keep their populations content with their tyrannical rule. If this is starting to sound like Marxist thinking to you then you're actually very clever. A serious point of departure I must take to this essay is his praise given to the (only ten years old at the time of writing) Russian revolution and newly formed USSR.
We all know how that experiment turned out, so how can I possibly be suggesting that going at it again is a going to be a good thing? The short answer is that I'm not. I am arguing that an economy with abundance for humanity requiring very little input of labor from humanity is on the horizon, or even just finishing its arrival and is starting to settle in. One of my great concerns is the way this could create a dictatorship masquerading as efforts to provide equally for all men like existed in communist Russia. I'll delve into this a little more in part 3.

Are We Ready for Post Scarcity? Part 1
The abundance of the modern day is staggering. Food alone is now requiring few man hours and producing vast amounts of product. In about 25 years the personal computer has gone from a relatively cutting edge office device to a ubiquitous handheld one. The amazing advances in technology will only cascade into more, and these will bring amazing blessings, conveniences, and boons to humankind. These are gifts we should be prepared to freely receive, but like a gift of chocolate that will make us sick if eaten to quickly or heavy book that will require much reading and concentration we need to be receive these with caution and adroitness.
Let's go back to food. One of the interesting points of contention between my brothers, me, and our grandmother is our approach and mentalities surrounding food. Our grandma, growing up in a family that suffered through and being born shortly after the great depression, views food as a precious and scarce resource. She often views food in terms of availability, enjoying buffets and inexpensive diners and being anxious over throwing away uneaten scraps or spoiling produce. My brothers, and even my parents, live in the modern age and see food as abundant. We don't like to waste food, but recognize that when the bread gets moldy it should be thrown out because it only costs a dollar or two (ten minutes of work at minimum wage) to get another loaf. We live devoid of the "clean your plate" ethic so common in past generations.
Thank heavens for that too, as obesity and overeating are a greater health risk to us than malnutrition (though I am skeptical of the magnitude of this risk). It's actually odd to think about health risks arising because nourishment is so easy to obtain. Taking anatomy and physiology I've learned hundreds of ways in which a deficiency of calcium, iodine, glucose, iron, or any other number of dietary intakes cause problems. It's bizarre to think of problems coming about simply because we have so much of those things we need and love that we run out places to put it and spend so much time and energy to keeping it all together.
Food is only the beginning of this, though. Technology is more and more in in the reach of anyone who'd like it. Entertainment and education is more available than ever with the internet. And these are just the commodities being made abundant with modern technology. Go even slightly futuristic and we have productive capabilities exploding via robotics, precious metals or gems having their scarcity destroyed by advanced chemical and materials engineering techniques, and even thought or creativity flooding the market in ways never before seen thanks to better distribution systems, or even AI and other futuristic computing creating new art.
The challenges presented by this can be staggering though. The central one is likely motivation. Survival and status have been the principle motivators of a person in the past. That might have meant being the mightiest hunter in the tribe that's always well fed or the most influential business magnate on wall street who always had some opportunity waiting, but the principles been the same. Many of us have said something like, "I really don't want to go to work today but they won't pay me if I don't so I guess I had better," and we've probably even said that with some frequency. If we reach post scarcity we theoretically won't ever need to get paid, so what will keep us getting out of bed in the morning and off the streets? I'll be investigating this and other ideas of a post-scarcity society and economy in part 2.

Technology, cheating, and the Augmented Mind
As a student I've been taking plenty of tests lately. My university has a pretty good testing system and convenient testing centers and I'm a pretty good test taker so none of this really bothers me, but I have found the testing center policies interesting. The fact that I have to remove my hat before going in is one. Recently they've also disallowed the wearing of a wristwatch, almost certainly in response to the new smart-watch technology coming out. While this is the right thing to do, it does indicate a need for much grander changes in both the way we do things as well as our thinking, probably especially in education. Changes we are woefully unprepared for.
Let's consider the testing center again, perhaps as if you were the director of these. We made the change for smart-watches so that they won't be used for cheating. What will we do if Google Glass, or a similar project where data is displayed on a pair of glasses worn by the user, takes off and starts showing up? If that technology becomes integrated into people's prescription lenses? What about if those smart watches become smart tattoos? What about when students start having direct neural interfaces integrating computers into the brain? These problems are coming, and I think we can quickly see there's no easy solution, and maybe no solution at all to make a our current testing systems compatible with the existence of these technologies.
As my neuroscience teacher put it, most testing today is a simple demonstration of declarative memory. This is to say tests usually require a simple recalling of facts, figures, or other basic knowledge. However, the need for this to be done in the human brain is dwindling. Facts can be more easily stored, more quickly recalled, and more reliably maintained in computer systems than in nervous tissue. Why would we keep using cerebral circuits (that weren't really designed to do this in the first place) when we can use electronic ones? The go to example is memorizing phone numbers, something many of us remember doing before technology made it an exercise in pointless exertion of energy.
Lest you think this is the pie in the sky omphaloskepsis of a futurist and science fiction fan, let me relay a story I heard from one parent. He wanted to have his daughter writing letters, and specifically to do so using some specific vocabulary. Shortly after he heard his daughter speaking out loud while alone in her room writing the letter. Listening closer he realized she was using the voice recognition feature of the tablet/smartphone to simply ask for the spelling of the appropriate words. This was much to his disappointment, as he was expecting her to look the words up when writing them and learn the definition along with the spelling. That's how big a change something as simple as voice recognition is making.
A future where traditional testing is pointless seems on the horizon. How education will or even can deal with this is unclear. The problem with leaving our traditional testing is that other methods require more work to evaluate, and usually are less objective which can be a big problem for admissions tests like the MCAT. The only solution I've thought of is an increase in internships and apprentice work, but whether or not this is feasible is unclear. I know the major reason the radiology or medical laboratory programs at my school can't admit more than about 40% of applicant students is because they only have so many slots for clinical rotations available. It could be damaging to the economy to have the influx of cheap or free labor that having five interns or apprentices to every one trained employee might mean. The problem is a big one, and sadly I haven't seen it given all that much attention. Let's hope for and work toward that changing sometime soon.
Let's consider the testing center again, perhaps as if you were the director of these. We made the change for smart-watches so that they won't be used for cheating. What will we do if Google Glass, or a similar project where data is displayed on a pair of glasses worn by the user, takes off and starts showing up? If that technology becomes integrated into people's prescription lenses? What about if those smart watches become smart tattoos? What about when students start having direct neural interfaces integrating computers into the brain? These problems are coming, and I think we can quickly see there's no easy solution, and maybe no solution at all to make a our current testing systems compatible with the existence of these technologies.
As my neuroscience teacher put it, most testing today is a simple demonstration of declarative memory. This is to say tests usually require a simple recalling of facts, figures, or other basic knowledge. However, the need for this to be done in the human brain is dwindling. Facts can be more easily stored, more quickly recalled, and more reliably maintained in computer systems than in nervous tissue. Why would we keep using cerebral circuits (that weren't really designed to do this in the first place) when we can use electronic ones? The go to example is memorizing phone numbers, something many of us remember doing before technology made it an exercise in pointless exertion of energy.
Lest you think this is the pie in the sky omphaloskepsis of a futurist and science fiction fan, let me relay a story I heard from one parent. He wanted to have his daughter writing letters, and specifically to do so using some specific vocabulary. Shortly after he heard his daughter speaking out loud while alone in her room writing the letter. Listening closer he realized she was using the voice recognition feature of the tablet/smartphone to simply ask for the spelling of the appropriate words. This was much to his disappointment, as he was expecting her to look the words up when writing them and learn the definition along with the spelling. That's how big a change something as simple as voice recognition is making.
A future where traditional testing is pointless seems on the horizon. How education will or even can deal with this is unclear. The problem with leaving our traditional testing is that other methods require more work to evaluate, and usually are less objective which can be a big problem for admissions tests like the MCAT. The only solution I've thought of is an increase in internships and apprentice work, but whether or not this is feasible is unclear. I know the major reason the radiology or medical laboratory programs at my school can't admit more than about 40% of applicant students is because they only have so many slots for clinical rotations available. It could be damaging to the economy to have the influx of cheap or free labor that having five interns or apprentices to every one trained employee might mean. The problem is a big one, and sadly I haven't seen it given all that much attention. Let's hope for and work toward that changing sometime soon.

From an Aspiring Medical Professional
I've always been a scientist. Some of my earliest memories are wanting to use beakers, test tubes, & microscopes in school. My mother tells me that one of my favorite toys as a child was an old radio I was allowed to disassemble and rebuild, being fascinated at how the pieces fit together. I've always seen science as exciting and fun. For most of the time that I understood the concept I've seen it as a noble pursuit as well. "The glory of God is intelligence," I was taught, and science is a rigorous pursuit of understanding.
I've learned since then about the very human nature of this endeavor. Learned things like how Newton's preference for a 'corpuscular' or particle theory of light, rather than the wave theory which works better, probably set back the field of optics a century or two, but few wanted to propose ideas that would dare contradict the great and powerful Newton. I've learned this about religion, philosophy, sports, families, and just about everything else humans do as well, though. These days science may have trouble acknowledging its limitations, but it does good and improves the human condition. And yet the ranks of those who share this view are suffering loses.
This seems mostly in the field of medicinal and health sciences. This rarely used to bother me, but it is more and more lately. Maybe it's because I'm getting older and the issues are closer to affecting me and involving choices I'll have to make. Maybe it's just because things that were more fringe in the past are getting talked about more these days. Maybe it's because part of me agrees that this field of science is a lot more blurry than the physics and mathematics I originally studied, but entering into the field I'm seeing the strength of the science. I'd be remiss not to have mentioned these possibilities in a writing about science, rigor, and emotion, but I don't think they're the reason. At least not the primary one.

So it feels odd for me to speak about my emotional and personal reactions in the context of understanding biomedical science, but it may be just what some need to hear.

It's difficult for me to say this as I don't believe it's intentional, but it is the truth. The message is that the medical profession, and therefore medical professionals, is a bumbling ignoramus unwilling to understand the simple truths that should be instinctively understood, a shadowy or scaremongering elite seeking only power and control, or an uncaring power more interested in processing patients to collect their checks than healing them. It may be some combination of the three, but these are the primary narratives with their implications laid bare and made plain.
I believe they are all wrong, but moreover I know they are all insulting. I think this might be why I've been more affected by those who leave the ranks of accepted science for other conceptions of fulfilling medicine. The secret message in those actions, words, and thoughts are that I don't care about my patients. I do care about my patients, and I don't even have any yet. I study hard and ensure I understand the concepts of my classes because I worry about making the wrong call and endangering someone's health. I've listened to opposing views, considered the ideas, and always been unconvinced that those methods and practices would best serve the sick or the healthy. I want to get paid for application of the skills I'm acquiring, sure, but I did when I worked other customer service positions as well and was still driven to serve the client. When I see someone taking medical risks I'm annoyed because so often those risks are unnecessary, and I care about them. So, from an aspiring medical professional, please reexamine your ideas if you're forgoing modern medicine. Please give me and my ilk the benefit of the doubt and some level of trust. We're absolutely doing our best to deserve that much.

Expressing Curiosity in Science
As a student of the sciences, mostly physics and recently medicine, I often will get caught in discussions of 'what is science?' as in a recent lab class. I often resist engaging in these because I feel they too often are trying to promote idealized views of this particular human endeavor. The humanity of the enterprise is forgotten in trying to give it good PR. Most recently I did have one thought on the subject that seemed of value though: science is one expression of the curiosity of mankind (and remember man in this context is gender neutral).
We have an interesting relationship with curiosity. The most well known phrase in regards to the subject is, "Curiosity killed the cat." I like to use the snappy rejoinder, "Well we better try to satisfy curiosity before that psycho goes off killing small animals to get their jollies then," but I recognize that the implication the phrase carries is to take caution with exploration and intuition. As should be obvious to the reader at this point I don't agree with this mentality, but that said it's never wise to throw caution to the wind entirely and we should certainly ensure that our actions properly reflect the correct balance of our desire to know something and other desires, such as comfort, safety, and community.
I still think that on balance curiosity is a virtue. I believe in the freedom of information, an understandable order and structure underlying the universe at large, and that challenges to one's thoughts and beliefs will eventually improve them if faced head on and not ignored. Curiosity lets us promote and explore these things. Consider what the opposite of curiosity might be. A quick look in the thesaurus brings up disinterest, indifference, perhaps even apathy. Does anyone really want to be with people or build a society with these qualities?
Science is one way in which we express our curiosity. It's perhaps the simplest, being based on straightforward observation of a community. Laws and theories are only useful in as much they can make verifiable predictions and only believable in as much as they are supported by data and experiment. This does make science somewhat limited in scope as most will recognize that there exist things that simply can't be proven one way or the other, but the pragmatic and skeptical mentality is a powerful tool for any thinker.
Science is of course a human enterprise, though. This expression of our curiosity is subject to the same forces that might make a desire for self improvement into greed or a longing for love and community into exclusion. Having guiding principles in a great human venture never means we follow them perfectly, or if it does it probably means we're losing sight of other virtues. The guiding virtues of science - observation, falsifiability and testability, and of course curiosity - will indeed help us in our endeavors to become virtuous.

Why I Like to Play Pretend
I've always loved to play pretend. As a kid the most entertaining thing I could do was imagine myself as someone different in a vastly different world. My parents have said that in my early years a teacher once, in reference to my independent imaginings of intrigue, said something like, "I was a little worried that Devon wasn't getting along with the other kids, but then I realized he just doesn't find playing with them that interesting." And why would I have? What possible competition could attempts to direct the motion of a ball around a field hold to the vivid flights of fancy surging through my mind?
I still like playing pretend, but with age have changed the ways I do so. There's writing, which is fun in it's creativity but requires quite a bit of commitment to craft something really satisfying. It's certainly not on par with running back and forth during recess freely directing the actions of whatever amazing character I had created. Reading is even more restrictive, and movies and television more so still. The best way I've found to recapture that adventurous imagining of childhood, and even build on it in some ways, is through tabletop role-playing games.
Tabletop RPGs aren't known for being creative and fun, except by those who've played them. Their reputation has sadly been horribly slandered almost since their inception. The most popular tabletop RPG, Dungeons and Dragons, was criticized in early years, like many works of fantasy such as the Harry Potter series, as being something which promoted satanism and witchcraft. This had the unfortunate effect of causing the game's creator, Gary Gygax, to feel he shouldn't admit to being a Christian. As he told a convention of gamers in 2007, "I was reticent to say the fact, you know, that I was a Christian, mainly because I was afraid that I would give Christianity a bad name because I did D&D. So I did, I kept my mouth shut."
The problem wasn't helped by a mother who, in my-admittedly biased by persecution and somewhat uncharitable given the involved tragedy-opinion, rather than accept the sad truths of mental illness which caused her son to commit suicide decided to crusade against Dungeons as Dragons as the evil which stole her son away from her. The result has been a society that largely feared the game (it even seemed a little creepy to me as a youngster after I got an email, probably an ad or invitation to an online game, that talked about how to hold 'death matches' and my father mentioned it sounded like "A D&D thing," which was reasonable but devoid of the now known innocuousness of pretend in those early days of both the game and the internet), and pushed only those sufficiently unbothered by the tut-tuts of society at large to be able to enjoy the game. This turned out to be the "nerds," and has left Dungeons and Dragons in particular and tabletop role playing in general with a stigma of silly foolishness engaged in only by those who never go outside or shower that has persisted to this day.
All this is a shame, really, because the games are quite fun and have a lot to offer. Tabletop RPGs provide a system for cooperative story telling. They can be similar in some ways to the games of 'pass the story' one might have played around campfires or in grade school writing classes, though a major difference is that one person takes primary control of the plot and everyone else directs the actions and dialogue of the main characters. The game rules help with this by creating a system for directing action, resolving conflicts, and defining a character's attributes. If you want to play a character that's particularly strong, but kinda dumb you can put this in his ability scores. The old playground fights, of, "I shot you." "Nuh, uh, I dodged it." are resolved with attack modifiers, armor classes, and dodge skill rolls. Players give respectful smiles and cheers to one another as they roll high numbers on dice of varied shapes, meaning that their characters have landed heavy blows on fearsome foes.
That camaraderie is another great thing about gaming. A group of friends being creative and enjoying one another's company. They pepper the story with details, often humorous as it's always fun to joke with friends. Friends come together in the game world to take on great evils and seek untold riches or amazing power, and they come together in our world to have fun and tell a good story.
I wish the hobby didn't have the baggage it does, because I think it adds a lot of value to one's life and could be used for many wonderful things, but it doesn't seem like I'll ever be able to get together that church group of gaming friends where an ecclesiastical leader guides the adventures of a group of holy warriors fighting the forces of evil and striving to live the principles of their faith, the professional group of executives playing characters who are always striving to gain treasure and power but must also protect the innocent and the weak to avoid alignment penalties, nor the student group adventuring to find the secrets of the universe. Games are a painfully under-utilized tool to motivate companionship, self-improvement, and promoting good causes. Tabletop RPGs are another unfortunate example of this. I'll still have fun playing though, whenever I can find a few friends that also enjoy playing games and being creative together.

Sadly, the porn must flow Part 3: Regulatory and Governmental Concerns
I've now addressed concerns with a mandatory pornography filtering system based on conceptual considerations on the nature of pornography and technical ones about how the system might work. Now I will focus on a critique of the plan based on the governmental and regulatory considerations, as stated in the title. A main point in my last part could be summed up as, "Don't trust your ISP to keep you safe, you're better off ensuring that on your own." If we replace ISP with government that same idea will be found here.
America has a unique approach to government in that a fundamental value we hold is liberty, and are sensitive to the power of government to curtail this among individuals or groups. The conflict between this and the need for law forms a basis to our society. Whether pornographic filtering should be mandatory is another manifestation for this conflict, and I will be falling on the side of liberty as opposed to security.
The concept of safety curtailing our liberties is one hotly contested in the media with the government's efforts in the last ten years to crack down on and protect against terrorism. This even has a more direct parallel in the field of communications with recent Snowden leaks on NSA data and metadata collection efforts that, in my own personal opinion and that of at least one court of law, violates American citizens' rights granted by the first (including and perhaps primarily the right of association) and fourth amendments. With these already in peril, why would we want to introduce a new government mandate and increase their ability to curtail citizens' rights online?
Yes, yes, I know, "No one's rights are being curtailed, anyone can still opt in and get the content they want." In the short view this may be true, though many of the points in my previous two essays on the subject should demonstrate ways it may also not be. Though I'd rather not delve too deeply into the 'slippery slope' argument as it necessarily relies on speculation and unverifiable prediction, it would be prudent to mention that any law or regulation would set a precedent that our personal communication methods are something the government has every right to manage.
The proposal would grant new regulatory powers over our methods of communication. It would be handed off to either ISPs or/and government committees and reduce choice for the individual. While it's only a default setting that would change right now, the shame often involved in the complex issue of obscenity could easily cause this to be the societal norm, and forcing those who either held liberal views about sexuality or possibly a desire to protect their privacy and security online to be forced into an 'internet ghetto.' Eventually these people might be lumped in with criminals and subject to greater invasion of their rights because they 'chose to use the internet in a manner recognized to reflect dangerous and deviant behavior.'
Let me explain by way of analogy. How would you feel if car dealerships were now required to sell cars that would automatically avoid driving you anywhere where obscene or illegal activities were known to occur? They would naturally have to standardize and define what obscene behavior was, and so a federal committee would now decide what parts of town you were allowed to drive to. If you wanted to have full control over where you could go in the car you bought you would need to ask the dealer, and maybe they would have a special license plate for your car so that everyone else wouldn't accidentally follow you or wonder why they were having trouble getting to a place that you went to without problems. Does that sound OK to you, or does it seem like a massive intrusion of government control in your life?
The internet is indeed a radically new method of communication. Earlier methods often fell naturally into a pattern of self-regulation when it came to pornography. Movies created a rating system, magazines went under the counter, TV shows had a set of standards to follow until after the watershed. Phone lines were pretty much just as available to youngsters as much as anyone else but you needed to know what number to call and the commercials didn't go on until after the watershed, so their exposure wasn't really significant and in any event parents would get the bill later. The internet, on the other hand, is hugely interconnected and once you're online you have access to most resources with nothing more than a name, or if you're not sure of that a search term will probably work just as well. The industry doesn't lend itself well to self regulationas it is a personal service, the connection is to your home, connected to a vast public network.
It does lend itself easily to personal regulation, though. In my last post I mentioned a few good and fairly easy solutions to filter pornography. I explained my feelings that those who were unwilling to gain the technical skills to implement these shouldn't be foisting their responsibility to protect themselves on the country at large as well, but there's another aspect to this naivete I'd like to address: that pornography is a problem that technology or regulation can only slow, not stop. It plays to the most basic human drives and desires. This is what makes it so tempting, and destructive.
The way to fight pornography is to teach the right values, habits, and behaviors. I admit the prevalence of pornography can make this difficult, but teaching our children and selves the truth of what pornography is is the most effective way to fight it. We shouldn't pretend that we can shut off any exposure to it, and instead prepare ourselves and develop the mental and spiritual discipline to be strong against it when we do. This may include a personal decision to install some sort of filter on our own networks. Others might not even see a need for this.
Maturity comes with responsibility, taking on accountability for the way we live and the decisions we make. I see this petition as immature, trying to abdicate the responsibility for avoiding pornography by passing it along to organizations believed to be more capable of doing so. We must take this responsibility upon ourselves though, immense as it may seem, because immaturity and liberty cannot coexist. The more we decide that something is too hard for us and should be handled by the government, the greater the state will become as the citizen becomes smaller and smaller.

Whether pornographic filtering should be mandatory is another manifestation for this conflict, and I will be falling on the side of liberty as opposed to security.
The concept of safety curtailing our liberties is one hotly contested in the media with the government's efforts in the last ten years to crack down on and protect against terrorism. This even has a more direct parallel in the field of communications with recent Snowden leaks on NSA data and metadata collection efforts that, in my own personal opinion and that of at least one court of law, violates American citizens' rights granted by the first (including and perhaps primarily the right of association) and fourth amendments. With these already in peril, why would we want to introduce a new government mandate and increase their ability to curtail citizens' rights online?
Yes, yes, I know, "No one's rights are being curtailed, anyone can still opt in and get the content they want." In the short view this may be true, though many of the points in my previous two essays on the subject should demonstrate ways it may also not be. Though I'd rather not delve too deeply into the 'slippery slope' argument as it necessarily relies on speculation and unverifiable prediction, it would be prudent to mention that any law or regulation would set a precedent that our personal communication methods are something the government has every right to manage.
The proposal would grant new regulatory powers over our methods of communication. It would be handed off to either ISPs or/and government committees and reduce choice for the individual. While it's only a default setting that would change right now, the shame often involved in the complex issue of obscenity could easily cause this to be the societal norm, and forcing those who either held liberal views about sexuality or possibly a desire to protect their privacy and security online to be forced into an 'internet ghetto.' Eventually these people might be lumped in with criminals and subject to greater invasion of their rights because they 'chose to use the internet in a manner recognized to reflect dangerous and deviant behavior.'
Let me explain by way of analogy. How would you feel if car dealerships were now required to sell cars that would automatically avoid driving you anywhere where obscene or illegal activities were known to occur? They would naturally have to standardize and define what obscene behavior was, and so a federal committee would now decide what parts of town you were allowed to drive to. If you wanted to have full control over where you could go in the car you bought you would need to ask the dealer, and maybe they would have a special license plate for your car so that everyone else wouldn't accidentally follow you or wonder why they were having trouble getting to a place that you went to without problems. Does that sound OK to you, or does it seem like a massive intrusion of government control in your life?
The internet is indeed a radically new method of communication. Earlier methods often fell naturally into a pattern of self-regulation when it came to pornography. Movies created a rating system, magazines went under the counter, TV shows had a set of standards to follow until after the watershed. Phone lines were pretty much just as available to youngsters as much as anyone else but you needed to know what number to call and the commercials didn't go on until after the watershed, so their exposure wasn't really significant and in any event parents would get the bill later. The internet, on the other hand, is hugely interconnected and once you're online you have access to most resources with nothing more than a name, or if you're not sure of that a search term will probably work just as well. The industry doesn't lend itself well to self regulationas it is a personal service, the connection is to your home, connected to a vast public network.
It does lend itself easily to personal regulation, though. In my last post I mentioned a few good and fairly easy solutions to filter pornography. I explained my feelings that those who were unwilling to gain the technical skills to implement these shouldn't be foisting their responsibility to protect themselves on the country at large as well, but there's another aspect to this naivete I'd like to address: that pornography is a problem that technology or regulation can only slow, not stop. It plays to the most basic human drives and desires. This is what makes it so tempting, and destructive.
The way to fight pornography is to teach the right values, habits, and behaviors. I admit the prevalence of pornography can make this difficult, but teaching our children and selves the truth of what pornography is is the most effective way to fight it. We shouldn't pretend that we can shut off any exposure to it, and instead prepare ourselves and develop the mental and spiritual discipline to be strong against it when we do. This may include a personal decision to install some sort of filter on our own networks. Others might not even see a need for this.
Maturity comes with responsibility, taking on accountability for the way we live and the decisions we make. I see this petition as immature, trying to abdicate the responsibility for avoiding pornography by passing it along to organizations believed to be more capable of doing so. We must take this responsibility upon ourselves though, immense as it may seem, because immaturity and liberty cannot coexist. The more we decide that something is too hard for us and should be handled by the government, the greater the state will become as the citizen becomes smaller and smaller.

Imagination and Knowledge
After my last post I decided I want to write another one this month, since I like to cool off and give any readers I might have a break when I go on tears about technology, law, and society. I didn't have a good topic that I wanted to talk about, though, so I asked my wife what she thought I should write on. She provided a one word prompt: imagination. I decided to go with this, but having something so broad I needed to keep looking. A few internet searches later I happened upon some Einstein quotes around, Imagination is more important than knowledge." In that way I have I said to myself, "¿Is it?" and then I realized I had a topic for a post.
I think considering imagination and knowledge more important than one another is actually a little misguided. They're different entities that have different purposes and bring differing benefits to a person or society. It's like saying hammers are more important than saws or potatoes are more important than chairs. And we can often get by with only one. But, these are two forces that gain the greatest power when working together.
Knowledge is a foundation. Knowledge tells us how the world and things in it work, how to do things, and how things are connected. Imagination gives us the capability to see how these facts could be different, improved, or superseded. But using imagination rarely can make a strong impact if we're without the knowledge to back this up. Knowledge lets us reasonably examine the ways in which the things we imagine might play out, so that when we try to put those things we imagine into reality the chance that we're successful is higher.
My love for Star Trek was recently re-kindled by a collection of online reviews of works in the franchise and one thing that's been striking is that one of the most impressive things about the franchise was its ability to imagine the future in a very different yet very reasonable way. Social issues such as race, ethnicity, and sex becoming less important to a team that works together. Also, amazingly, the science of instantaneous point to point transportation, faster than light travel, and futuristic weaponry (though it was changed later, the original meaning of the term "phaser" was "photonic maser" which, while actually redundant since the microwaves a maser produces are made up of photons, points toward the laser which does indeed exist and could be weaponized). Many of the high points of the series' are when this works to add believably and a feeling of reality to the impossible,and failures of the series often occur thanks to imagination being backed up by too little knowledge.

Choosing Style & Convenience Over Principles
Consider which of the following philosophies you agree with more:
Our choice in technology tends to be surprisingly shallow when we consider the depth of the effect technology has on us. We decide based on what looks nice, has the coolest features, or sometimes (usually if we're a little more informed) runs well and has the most processing power. For something that is so rapidly changing the way we interact, work, and quite arguably think this seems like pretty arbitrary criteria. Will it cause me to seek large amounts of less intimate relationships more efficiently? Will I ponder issues less in favor of looking up a quick and easy answer from a third party source in the most sleek and stylish way? These are the kind of questions we're asking, when we could be asking ourselves questions like, "Will I be engaging in and contributing to a infrastructure that promotes openness and individual freedom?"
If I may be candid for a moment let me admit my smug tech nerd ways. I used to be a little annoyed, mostly due to the immaturity one has early in life that others know different things than you do, when people didn't know how a computer's file system worked, the difference between a program and a text file, or why they couldn't get on the internet. I'm quickly becoming less annoyed by these people, but that annoyance is being replaced by fear.
I'm afraid because I know that market forces drive technology, and it's terrifying to see the market choose flashy, easy, and restrictive items over empowering items that might make them work a little harder. I'm afraid because working in tech support I've seen just how helpless people are when their technology breaks, how helpless many people are when it comes to fixing their technological problems, and how earnestly industry is working to make sure that problems may come up less at the expense of being fixable without being invited into a company's inner circle to error codes and access controls. I worry about living in a world where a relatively small conglomerate of programmers, advertisers, and businessmen are making sweeping decisions on how people live their lives, and the people are relatively powerless to and even uninterested in changing that.
Many are afraid of the effect technology is having on the human psyche and sociological structures. It's easy to blame the technology for this, but I feel that's misguided. If our minds or societies are becoming corrupted it's not thanks to the internet, smartphones, or video games. It's because we're using these poorly. And why wouldn't we if most of us don't know how they work at all, and only know what they do as the company making it presents that to us?
Studying mathematics and physics where most modern research is done with the aid of computers I'm perhaps blessed to have been taught in a tradition that specifically points out where computers are helpful and where our own intellect should be applied. Questions of what's computable and what isn't are addressed directly, as well as questions of the best way to compute that which we would indeed like to compute.
I worry a lot about my tone here. As I recently found out when reading a book on obesity, it's sadly easy to dismiss those presenting information and ideas about something as, "Oh, they're one of those type of people. That explains why they would say that." It would be so easy to end up being that "smugly superior" guy who'll criticize folk for having different views on technology or not knowing as much as he does about computers. As the comic below illustrates thouygh, sooner or later we'll be uncomfortable with how the technology we use works, and if unless we develop the appropriate infrastructure we'll be unable to change it.

I recognize that Apple has abstracted more of the functions for the user and produced very powerful, stable, efficient (though you wouldn't know if from their pricing) technology solutions, but you're missing the point. Well behaved women seldom make history.
I've never been very fond of the slogan in this post's title, I guess because the idea of rebellion and, "behaving badly" hasn't held much appeal for me. Imagine my surprise, then, when I found the original author of the famous slogan far from intended the meaning it now holds, and may even agree with me-at least to some degree.
The phrase, "Well behaved women seldom make history," was first written my Laurel Thatcher Ulrich in a scholarly paper on Puritan funeral sermons. Being far from an academic of history myself I've not read the original paper, but after looking into things a little bit it appears that the author's intention was to point out the way these Puritan women weren't seeking fame or glory. The same paper contains the (much more poignant, in my own opinion) line, "They never asked to be remembered on Earth. And they haven't been."
From what I've found about Ulrich's career, the paper may have also served as criticism of the way history is studied. She seems to have lobbied criticism at the historical establishments and their failures to appreciate the effects and actions of the rank and file members of society. When honored as a professor at Harvard it was said
I think this is where my quarrel with the famous quote comes in; it reinforces the idea that to be great or important, to influence history, to "make a difference" one must necessarily acquire fame in the process. The first black president of the United States would not have been elected without a society that collectively let the scourge of racism whither on the vine rather than hold on to obsolete mentalities. Dr. Ulrich addresses the idea, "that 'empowered' women are by definition 'wild' women. That is a very old idea. Since antiquity, misogynists have insisted that females, being more emotional than males, are less stable, more likely to swing between extremes." She also points out that, "Marie Curie didn't win two Nobel prizes by throwing tantrums in the lab." and that Rosa Parks made history not only for her refusal to abide with the bigoted laws of her day but also because she was recognized as a hard working, upstanding, "well behaved" woman (other women had been arrested for the same thing, but unlike Rosa Parks their lifestyle choices made it too hard to build a case to fight the unjust law they were bucking).
In my younger years, probably until about my junior year of college, I enjoyed aspirations to fame and greatness. I wanted to win the Nobel for physics after making my own re-writes to the laws that govern our universe. I still wouldn't mind doing this, or any other number of fantastic ventures, but I'm also content with my current role in life, unimpressive though it may be especially when compared with the grandiose aspirations of my youth. I feel that I will have lived a life of incalculable worth and leave a powerful legacy even if no one remembers my name after 100 years as long as I continue learning and enriching my mind, be a good husband to my wife (and someday I'm sure, a good father to my children), work hard and earn money honestly, use that money wisely, and live in accordance with my values. I don't feel women should be robbed of this feeling of contentment that living an unassuming & simple but upstanding and meaningful life because they are told that they should be empowered & wild, rebellious, and "not well behaved."

The Fourth Amendment in the Information Age
In my last post I mused on the nature of data and how the information about us defines who we are. I was spurned to write this and finished off the post presenting disappoint with Verizon, my cell carrier, and their failure to protect users' privacy and respect their charge in holding data about us. Lately Verizon has been in the news for handing over call records to the NSA, so the wound has had salt thrown in it rather than had time to heal, so to speak. In my investigations into jumping ship from a company so cavalier about it's responsibility to protect who I am in the form my data I've had some interesting experiences.
I sent an email to Sprint asking if their company does anything to protect users' data and privacy. Their response was,
Both could of course be true, in fact the latter may be the cause and the former the effect. I find the latter more interesting, though. It's easy to dismiss concern with how a company protects (or more often fails to protect) our information as unfounded worry about "government conspiracies" (in fact, that's exactly who a T-Mobile salesperson ended up characterizing my concern when asking about it at a store location). While the fact that most citizens probably won't be much affected is true and the majority of people (including myself with all my seditious comments coming out on this blog) aren't interesting, influential, or dangerous enough for the government to take the effort to spy on, the issue is far from unimportant for everyone save a few security advocates, legal scholars, and tech enthusiasts.
As I pointed out in my last post we're seeing the importance of the physical diminish. The things that are important to us are increasingly in the form of data accessed in a number of different ways? As these changes in the way we communicate, work, and create emerge so the laws which will govern these new methods of living. And they are being changed.
"The Fourth Amendment (Amendment IV) to the United States Constitution is the part of the Bill of Rights which guards against unreasonable searches and seizures, along with requiring any warrant to be judicially sanctioned and supported by probable cause." This worked well for many years when communication took place between two people in the form of physical letters that they could keep on their property and evidence showed up as physical items that, again, could be held on someone's property. These laws are essentially being re-written as more and more of what's important to us has a digital presence.
The fourth amendment seems to grow out of the presumption of innocence. We aren't to be observed, investigated, or seized until some degree of proof of guilt can be obtained. This is what's being eroded by modern electronic surveillance. It echos the complaints by so many in gaming when considering many invasive digital rights management (DRM) systems, "I'm being treated like a criminal when I haven't done anything wrong. They're just assuming I'm going to steal things."
Privacy and the internet is always, and may always be, a thorny issue. There's many conflicting theories, ranging from the internet being a surveillance state, to the assumption of privacy which is continually being shown to be unsupported, to complex privacy policies written by lawyers and mostly ignored by users, to understanding that privacy is only there when one takes the steps to encrypt their data and secure their connections. The internet is increasingly how we live our lives-in both private and public contexts-and after fighting for our rights and freedoms in the physical world we need to take up the fight once more for cyberspace, whether that means holding elected officials accountable, suffering the inconvenience of using security software, or considering privacy and data security when selecting service providers.

There's no real way to peer behind the curtain and discern why they responded with the air of, "Oh geez I don't want to talk about this please don't make me say anything why are you doing this to me?" My speculation on the subject, which I feel such a curious response deserves, would be that either Sprint is just as uncaring when it comes to customers' data and privacy and can provide no unembarrassing response to a customer asking these type of questions, or that they are actually fearful of what might happen should they take a stand.Sprint as a company is not commenting on this report. We do not haveany information to share, and that Sprint will not be commenting on thesubject.

The internet is increasingly how we live our lives-in both private and public contexts-and after fighting for our rights and freedoms in the physical world we need to take up the fight once more for cyberspace, whether that means holding elected officials accountable, suffering the inconvenience of using security software, or considering privacy and data security when selecting service providers.

Our Data is Who We Are
The physical is becoming less and less important in the modern world. Sure, there will always be a need for physical mediums (after all "There is no such thing as immaterial matter. All spirit is matter"), but information is what reigns supreme in importance. This has always been true, in many ways. As Carl Sagan said, "The beauty of a living thing is not the atoms that go into it, it's the way those atoms are put together." In another way, humanity has been marching toward this for ages; Since the invention of writing a stone could be transformed into the law of the land or God, a history of a people, or an agreement between two parties. The invention and standardization of money intensified this.
The idiom that you can find out a lot about a person by going through their trash may still be true, but it's been found that with a handful of data readily made available people can know exactly who we are (in this study 4 locational data points were enough to identify 95% of participants). While it's (probably) true that you wouldn't be you without your physical body, too often we forget that we wouldn't be who we are without our memories, habits, and interpersonal connections-all of which computers are increasingly involved in and therefore archiving.
As a Verizon wireless customer I was devastated to see this report from the Electronic Frontier Foundation surveying different companies and what measures they were taking to protect users' privacy. I've known for a while that Verizon was kind of a scumbag company, managing to continue living only because they've acquired a great deal of infrastructure. When (also scumbag, when it comes to users' data) companies like Comcast and Facebook (I'm not including Google even though many might have worries about the amount of data they collect because they did manage to collect 5 out of 6 stars in this survey, and I genuinely appreciate the company) as well as the two lower end Apple and AT&T still manage to find some way in which they can protect users' data rights are still beating out my carrier, I worry.
I'm seriously considering leaving Verizon, and would probably side with Sprint. The financial, coverage, and overall convenience implications makes me hesitate, but I really feel like making sure a company that isn't making any effort to protect my digital self shouldn't be supported by my money. I'd love to leave Comcast for the same reason, and may look into campaigning within my complex to get a different service provider. The power a service provider has in my life is unnerving, considering how important my data is to me. After all, in a very real way the data about me is who I am.

Sharing an Idea
Since I just got married I've been posting about marriage, relationships, and the like lately and I've seen an interesting thing happen, people responded. I got comments, page views, and people telling me how much they liked my last post. It's always nice to hear feedback from others and find out people are actually paying attention. Still, part of me is actually a little disheartened by this surge of interest, because it carries an implication that people didn't read, or just plain didn't care about what I was writing before.
I wouldn't have predicted my newer writings would have eclipsed some of my others, because I find them more personal in scope. Curiosities of my personality, musings on relationships (of which there's already enough literature to fill several libraries of Alexandria, and what I bring surely cannot be that novel), and altogether introspection on how I feel during such a pivotal moment of my life. Maybe I should be honored and awed that others care about enough that they love my introspection. Maybe they feel they're getting to know me better through my writings, and that's what engages them so deeply, and again I should be cheerful to know people like getting to know me.
But perhaps that's also just it. Yes that personal side who loves his beautiful new wife and was eager to marry her is there. Yes, I have thoughts and feelings about romance and love like most everyone else. Yes, I am relate-able in those ways and those are all important to me. There are other things that are deeply meaningful to me, though. These are things that run from boring to meaningless to spurned to intimidating (and therefore avoided as much as possible) to much of the population in which I live.
Often what I write blog posts if not necessarily to change vernacular perspective at least to offer a different one. I find topics of science, mathematics, and technology - and especially the public's interaction with these - of immense importance. These are the ventures of human endeavor that will shape the future to which hurtling toward us faster and faster every day (ponder a moment on the technologies changing the way we communicate and relate to one another that have come to fruition in the last ten to twenty years) and the lijera (Spanish for lightness, but possibly carrying an extra connotation or two that made me want to use it in place of an English word here) with which people take these today is distressing to me.
I was once asked by an aunt something like, "What's it like to be as smart as you are?" My answer was a jocular but wistful, "Lonely," and then by way of explanation, "When I talk about something that I find fascinating and then see the eyes of whomever I'm speaking with glaze over what do I do? Pretend something important to me isn't or speak without regard to a fellow human being."

Taxes and Taxation
I recently did my taxes and have also been reading The Federalist Papers and have been thinking a lot about taxation lately. One thing that always strikes me at tax time is the labyrinthine extensiveness of the tax code. I'm terrified of filing next year, trying to figure out how I'll file after getting married, having an HSA, and who knows what else is still to come. The complexity of the tax code is always what has struck me as the most immoral thing about it.
In The Federalist Papers Alexander Hamilton said, "The genius of the people will ill brook the inquisitive and peremptory spirit of excise laws." (emphasis added) We are living a world of privacy concerns. We watch our internet service providers eavesdrop on their customers at the behest of the entertainment industry or for advertising profit, the web services we use constantly collect that details of how we're using them, we keep devices in our pockets which may upload our exact location throughout our day, and we're told to be careful about grocery store discount cards as they can easily lead our eating habits getting sold to an insurance company to raise our rates. In this world of shrinking privacy our government should be working to protect what we have left, but instead we see it complacent and then at tax time bold faced enough to ask and expect us to answer a slew of questions about our investments, medical bills, work location, housing, and 'anything else you might have missed.'
An uncle of mine that prepares taxes has said that he would be unable to do so without the aid of computers. The fact that we have created such a situation is ludicrous. I have more than one uncle who makes pretty decent money preparing people's taxes, so let me make one thing very clear: I don't think there's inherent corruption in the tax preparation industry. There's competition, people concern themselves with following the law, and try to be honest. That said, I don't think it should exist. The fact that the layman cannot pay those who govern him without going through an entity that's insinuated itself through great deal of study and hard work is unnerving. I don't want a people that separated from their government, especially regarding something affects them so directly. This can only be done through an exceedingly simple tax code, far from what we have now where only one who devotes his life to understanding the tax code or is wealthy enough to hire someone who does will get the benefits of it.
This country was founded on many things, but one of them was "no taxation without representation." We believed so strongly that we deserved a say in how and why governments take money from us that we fought for that right. Has the American spirit dwindled to a point where we accept taxes as an inevitability, overseen by some arcane power that we can only glimpse through the eyes of a few initiated elite among us?
